ABOUT MINI SCHNAUZERS

Miniature Schnauzer Breeder in Texas

Personality Traits

ACTIVE: Schnauzers love and need daily exercise. Whether you have a yard large enough for daily activity or you have a place that has space for walking your pup, be prepared to allow your schnauzer to be active!

GREAT WATCHDOGS/ NOT YAPPYThe Miniature Schnauzer personality lends them to being fantastic watchdogs. They will most likely sound the alarm when someone comes to visit, so no one will be sneaking up on you. Some people assume most smaller dogs are "yappy", but a schnauzer does not typically bark just to bark. Some schnauzers do enjoy "talking" with you, and it is something schnauzer lovers find endearing!

SOCIAL & PLAYFUL: Miniature schnauzers make fabulous family pets! Most do well with people of all ages. My puppies are all raised around my children, so they get early socialization to small hands. Schnauzers love to play fetch, tug-a-war, and hide & seek. When they aren't playing, a schnauzer loves companionship and enjoys cuddling up on your lap. Most people that have owned schnauzers can attest to the fact that schnauzers are "little shadows", and they love to be with you- wherever you are!

J&T SCHNAUZER FAQS

  • Are Mini Schnauzers Hypoallergenic?
Yes, Miniature Schnauzers are considered hypoallergenic because they have a double coat that sheds very little. This breed produces less dander, which can help reduce allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. However, no dog is entirely hypoallergenic, and reactions can vary from person to person. Regular grooming and maintenance are recommended to minimize allergens.
  • Are Mini Schnauzers Aggressive?
No, Miniature Schnauzers are not typically aggressive. They are known for their friendly, alert, and spirited nature. While they can be protective and may show some territorial behavior, they are generally good with families and other pets when properly socialized. Training and early socialization are key to ensuring a well-behaved Miniature Schnauzer.
  • Are Miniature Schnauzers suitable for Therapy Work?
Miniature Schnauzers make wonderful candidates for therapy work and/or emotional support. Schnauzers are very in tune with their owners and are known to pick up on your emotions. Their personalities make them perfect for training and specialization as a therapy dog.
  • Do Miniature Schnauzers make Good Family Pets?

  • How big will a Miniature Schnauzer get?
The size of a Miniature Schnauzer tends to fluctuate some, but most of my J&T schnauzers range in size from 10-14lbs full grown. To me this is the perfect size! Not too small or fragile, but still very portable!
  • Do Miniature Schnauzers bark a lot?

  • Male vs. Female?
Male vs. Female Does a male or a female make a better pet for you and your family? It’s not uncommon for people to believe that a female dog will make a better pet. We get a lot of calls for people wanting that “special little girl”. For whatever reason they don’t think that females will exhibit “alpha” behaviors like humping and/or marking. A lot of people think that females are more passive and friendly and that they don’t take part in fighting over dominance, which could NOT be farther from the truth. If you check out the structure of dog packs, the females determine the pecking order and rule the roost. The result of that behavior is that the females become more stubborn, independent, and territorial than the males. These females are much more intent on exercising their control by participating in that “alpha” behavior like humping. Most fighting will usually break out between two females. Males tend to be more affectionate, exuberant, attentive, and even more demanding of attention. The males are very attached to their owners, tending to be more dedicated, reliable and less temperamental. They are more sociable, more accepting of other pets, playful for years, and take quicker to children. Most boys are easily motivated by treats/food, words of praise and are so eager to please that training actually becomes easier. Their playful nature, however, can make males more easily distracted. The boys are more likely to act silly and more puppy-like, always wanting to play games, no matter what their age. The boys are fun-loving until the day they die, whereas girls tend to be more standoffish and dignified the older they get. Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as marking and lifting their legs or humping. Once the testosterone levels recede after neutering, most of these behaviors will disappear if they ever existed. So before making your decision on that age old dilemma of male verses female, hopefully this will give you some helpful info to think about.
  • What schnauzer colors are recognized by AKC?
All schnauzer colors are recognized by AKC and are AKC registerable aside from the merle pattern. Some people believe that if your schnauzer is not of the "standard" colors that they are not pure bred. This is far from the truth. Even my merle patterned dogs will DNA test as 100% schnauzer since the pattern has been bred into the lines for so long.
